Fast growing Evergreens are an absolute favorite of mine to accomplish year-round privacy. I prefer them to trees sometimes because they offer a nice, lush, and thick wall of greenery that never thins or disappears!

There are many great options to choose from when it comes to quick growing evergreens for privacy.

Here are a few of our favorite fast growing evergreens:

Full Speed A Hedge® ‘American Pillar’

The Full Speed A Hedge® ‘American Pillar’ is a wonderful fast growing evergreen that will reach a mature heights of up to 30 feet! They are tall and narrow and are best planted in tight rows to achieve maximum a privacy screen or windbreak.

It grows well in zones 3-8, which is practically everywhere! They are hardy evergreens that survive harsh winters, but are also high heat tolerant. Water them well and provide them with well draining soil.

North Privet

The North Privet is probably the most favored fast growing privacy hedge in the US! It performs well in all zones and produces a thick, dense, foliage.

This evergreen is a great option for privacy as it tolerates both full and partial shade. Not only that, but it’s adaptable to a variety of soil types.

The coolest thing about the North Privet is sheer density of this hedge and can be trimmed and grown into gorgeous shapes! Perfect for adding an element of design to any yard!

Green Giant Arborvitae

The Green Giant Arborvitae is another popular option when selecting plants that will provide an extra layer of privacy. It typically grows up to three feet a year and can reach heights of up to 60 feet tall.

The height of this gorgeous plant is impressive, bit it can also span widths of up to 20 feet. This impressive size is an ideal choice, especially if you have a large space to cover.

The most successful locations in the US to grow the Green Giant Arborvitae is in zones 5-7. Ideal plants for areas with a deep winter as they can successfully withstand all the elements.

Quick Growing Shade Trees

What’s better than a rapidly growing tree? One that provides shade! If you’re planting any tree near your home to provide a level of privacy, you should absolutely choose one that also provides shade to protect you from summer heat.

This is a smart, double benefit. Selecting a privacy tree that provides shade will keep your home cooler in the summer and also help protect it from the cold weather elements.

If you are successful in planting them close enough and having strong, sturdy trunks, you can even install a summer hammock. Did someone say outdoor summer naps?!

Here are some of our favorite quick growing trees for shade:

Northern Red Oak

Perhaps the most popular and well loved tree in North America, the Northern Red Oak is a staple in many communities. It’s a full, lush and stately tree, perfect for lining the street and lining your property. This beauty hosts a magnificent fall display of vibrant reds and oranges during fall foliage.

The Northern Red Oak can grow to a majestic 75 feet tall and 45 feet wide. It’s most successful grow regions are 3-8 in all types of soil, especially clay-like compact kinds.

Pin Oak

This gorgeous tree grows tall, up to 70 feet! With deep green leaves that turn a beautiful red during fall foliage, this is a stunner. It grows quickly at a rate of about two feet per year and is mostly found in zones 4-8.

With a thick and intricate branch set, this tree offers great shade protection. It’s best planted in a location with full sun and all soil types, except alkaline.

It produces tiny acorns year round and attracts all kinds of wildlife, including deer, squirrels, birds and turkeys.

Make sure you have enough room for this stunning tree to grow, as it can reach up to 40 feet wide!

Weeping Willow

Weeping Willow trees are my absolute favorite. They are majestic and delicate at the same time. With their long, graceful branches and shimmery, fluttery leaves, they offer a beautiful sweeping shade.

This gorgeous tree can grow up to 40 feet tall and have willowy branches that can sweep the ground. It’s romantic features start sprouting very early into the spring season and turn a pale yellow through the fall.

Weeping Willow trees grow best in wet conditions, ideally near a water source for consistently wet soil. It’s adaptable to a variety of soil conditions and does well in both partial shade and full sun.
